How to Safely Introduce a Rescue Dog to Your Cats

Introducing a new dog to a household with cats requires patience and a structured approach.
The Golden Rules
- Total Separation First: Keep them in separate rooms for at least the first 3-5 days. Let them sniff each other under the door.
- Scent Swapping: Swap their blankets so they can get used to the scent of the other animal before ever seeing them.
- Controlled Visual Access: Use a baby gate for their first visual interaction. Keep the dog on a leash and reward calm behavior with high-value treats.
Never force an interaction, and always make sure your cat has high vertical spaces they can escape to!
